7th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destination. Barcelona (Spain) 3-4 October 2013. Deadline: 23 July
Deadline: 23 July 2013
The 7th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destination takes place this year in Barcelona-Catalunya. The main event is on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th October, preceded by a full-day field trip to learn about the regeneration of L’Estartit on the Costa Brava on October 2nd. L’Estartit is a leading example of how a damaged resort can be restored and enabled to thrive again and we shall end the day with a round table discussion comparing this restoration with the work done on Calvia in Majorca in the 1990s. There are only 100 places on this one day excursion – book earlyto avoid disappointment. For academics this is a valuable teaching example and follows the RTD7 Academic Day on October 1st – papers, presentations and posters welcome.
In 2010 Catalunya received nearly 20 million staying visitors, and Barcelona’s tourism has grown rapidly since they hosted the Olympics in 1992. Furthermore, efforts have been made to responsibly manage the 25 million visitors the city receives every year, more than 7 million of which are staying guests at hotels.
The conference themes are:
- Widening social participation in tourism: access for all
- Managing Cruise Tourism in the Mediterranean
- Taking responsibility for the environmental impacts of tourism
- The role of government in destination planning and management
- Sense of place, responsibility and the visitor experience
Co-chaired by Mr. Jordi Ficapal, Responsible Tourism Observatory Director, TSI-Turisme Sant Ignasi (Universitat Ramon Llull), and Professor Harold Goodwin, ICRETH, Leeds Metropolitan University.
